Red Robin

Over the past 12 months I have been watching the same Red Robin visit my garden but I have never been able capture him in a photograph.... until today.  I had a spare half hour during my lunch break so I took my camera into the garden and I was lucky enough to be visited by the man himself!

To capture the birds in my garden I use a combination of lenses.  I use my Canon 70-200mm 2.8L at 200mm.  However, at 200mm, this is not a strong enough zoom to get a close shot of the bird.  Therefore, I use 2x extender to achieve 400mm.  Both of these items are pictured below.

The 2x extender doubles the zoom of any canon L series lens.  However, this comes at a price which is a reduction in light of 2 x stops.  Therfore dropping my 2.8L lens to a 5.6.  This alone is not a problem providing there is good available light at the time.  Futhermore, I have found that shooting at F8 delivers the sharpest image.  Sadly today, I forgot about this and was shooting at F5.6... ggrrrrr.  This means my Red Robin images are not as perfect and as sharp as I would like however, after waiting 12 months to capture him I am happy!
